Year Group Pages
Year 1 has three classes, Penguins, Dolphins and Octopus. Penguins are taught by Miss Preston, Dolphins by Mrs Dhadwal and Octopus by Miss Atkinson. We have a team of two super HLTAs, Miss Sutton and Mrs Fowler and two fabulous TAs by the names of Mrs Parry and Mrs Saunders. We also have the magnificent Graduate Tutor Miss Kangal-Nurse.
Read, Write, INC.
Read, Write, Inc is an inclusive literacy programme for all children learning to read from Early Years Foundation Stage through to Year 4. Spelling, comprehension, handwriting and composition are all taught through the scheme. Partner work is used all the time to build confidence and share ideas.
Maths Makes Sense
Maths Makes Sense allows children to access the abstract concepts of maths. It includes direct instruction, guided practise and partner teaching. MMS is built around the 'ten big ideas' - addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, equals, the symbols speak to you, the logic of the language tells you the answer, denomination, ratio and infinity. The children get to use cups to count and understand the idea of basic fractions.
Children are taught a wide range of subjects outside of Maths and English. Our topic for term 1 is the Ice Age, which will be taught through History, Geography, Art and DT. In RE we will be studying Hinduism; PSHE will focus on taking responsibility and new beginnings; Computing will look at e-safety and how computers work; and our Science theme is 'Ourselves'.
The children will be sent home with a reading book suited to their level. Reading books will be changed on the day that you child returns them.
Please ensure you write a comment in the reading record book and sign it, so as we know your child has read. The book will not be changed without a signature. For every 10 signatures, your child will get a reading certificate. When they have received 10 certificates they will get a prize of a book. Children are expected to read at home for 15 minutes a night as the more they practise, the quicker they will progress.
All classes have a session of outdoor PE and indoor PE. In Term 1:
Penguins will have PE on a Wednesday
Dolphins will have PE on a Monday
Octopus will have PE on a Thursday
Please make sure your child has a named PE kit in school every day. We will try and take the children outside as much as we can, so please ensure they have a pair of black or navy blue joggers in their PE kit. Thank you.
We are very lucky to have a Forest School area, which is run by Mrs. Hurrell. Each class will have two terms worth of sessions and in term 1 it will be the turn of Dolphins Class. Please remember to provide your child with a pair of named wellington boots as we will go outside in all weathers! Waterproof bodysuits will be provided.
